Somerset County Bridge Named for Fallen Corrections Officer, Metzgar Says

HARRISBURG – A bridge dedicated to a fallen corrections officer who succumbed to injuries during an assault at the State Correctional Institution at Somerset was dedicated in Sgt. Mark J. Baserman’s memory Friday, according to Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Bedford/Somerset), who spearheaded the legislative effort (2019 Act 102) to name the bridge.

Metzgar to Designate PFC Alton Glenn Sterner Memorial Bridge in Rockwood Borough

WHAT: A portion of State Route 2016 (Rockdale Road) over the Casselman River will be designated as the PFC Alton Glenn Sterner Memorial Bridge. PFC Sterner was a native of Rockwood Borough who served with the U.S. Army 5th Regimental Combat Team during the Korean War. He gave his life in service to his country on June 19, 1953.

Metzgar, Stefano Announce $65,000 for Windber Blight Remediation

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) and Sen. Pat Stefano (R-Fayette/Somerset/Westmoreland) today announced that Windber Borough has been awarded a grant of $65,000 through the Blight Remediation Program for the demolition of six blighted properties in the borough.

Metzgar, Stefano Announce $50,000 Grant for Rockwood Borough Flood Control Project

HARRISBURG – Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) and Sen. Pat Stefano (R-Fayette/Somerset/Westmoreland) today announced that Rockwood Borough has been awarded a grant of $50,197 to make repairs and upgrades to its flood control system. These funds were approved through the Flood Mitigation Program (FMP), which is administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA).

House Passes Bill to Aid Nonprofit, Volunteer First Responder Organizations, Metzgar Says

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania House of Representatives today passed House Bill 290, which would allow the online operation and reveal of contest winners of raffles and drawings for nonprofit and first responder organizations, which is not allowed under current law. This change would expire upon the conclusion of the COVID-19 disaster emergency or May 1, 2022, whichever happens later.

Wayne Langerholc (R-Bedford/Cambria/Clearfield) today announced that school districts in Bedford County have been awarded $103,581 in Safe Schools Target Grants, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Grants are awarded to schools to prevent and reduce violent incidents, to purchase safety and security-related equipment, and to provide for the training and compensation of school resource and police officers.

Metzgar, Stefano Announce $2.5 Million in Loans for Area Water System Upgrades

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) and Senator Pat Stefano (R-Fayette/Somerset/Westmoreland) today announced that the Windber Area Authority and Indian Lake Borough have been awarded two loans totaling over $2.5 million from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST). Of the total, $1.57 million will go to Indian Lake Borough, while the remaining $940,000 will go to the Windber Area Authority.

Metzgar Votes to Give Control to Schools, Allow Spectators at Athletic Events

Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) today announced that the House of Representatives has passed House Bill 2787, which would give the authority to make decisions regarding school athletic events to each individual school entity. Schools would determine whether or not to hold athletic and extracurricular events, and whether or not to allow spectators at said events.
