Metzgar says Castle Doctrine Passage a Victory for Law-Abiding Citizens

Following passage of House Bill 1926, which includes the Castle Doctrine legislation, Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) today called it a major victory for hard-working, law-abiding citizens in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

“This legislation is long overdue, and sadly, became a political football in the hands of some elements that sought to deprive our citizens of the right to defend themselves, their property and families,” said Metzgar. “A number of my colleagues and I worked hard to finally get this passed for a simple reason, our citizens deserve to feel safe in their homes and occupied vehicles, and they have a guaranteed right to the legal ownership of firearms. This bill allows citizens to defend themselves against attackers without the fear of civil or criminal penalties.”

Metzgar says there is one more key step in this process.

“It is a shame that it has taken this long to pass this common-sense legislation that speaks directly to the safety of our citizens, but this battle is not over yet. In order for this bill to become law, it must be signed by Gov. Ed Rendell. I am calling on the governor to stand with Pennsylvanians who work hard and abide by the laws and rules of society every day, and allow them to protect themselves when confronted by violent criminals.
