Berlin Youth and Metzgar Show Holstein at Farm Show’s Inaugural VIP Dairy Showmanship Contest

Rep. Carl Metzgar joins Ashley Stoltzfus of Berlin at the 2010 Farm Show. Stoltzfus allowed Metzgar to show her Holstein as a part of the first-ever VIP Dairy Showmanship Contest. Shown here left-to-right are Chris Herr, Executive Vice-President of PennAG Industries Association, Alan Zepp of the Center for Dairy Excellence, Ashley Stoltzfus, Ashley's Holstein, Rep. Metzgar, Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and John Frey of the Center for Dairy Excellence.

As part of the first-ever VIP Dairy Showmanship Contest at the 2010 Pennsylvania Farm Show on Wednesday, Jan. 13, Ashley Stoltzfus of Berlin, Somerset County, allowed Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Bedford/Somerset) to present her Holstein dairy cow in the competition.

“I am proud that Ashley allowed me to show her Holstein cow in this first-time event at the Farm Show, and it was a great thrill,” said Metzgar. “She has done a magnificent job in raising her cow, and she is a great example of what our young people are doing for agriculture here at home and around the Commonwealth.”

This took place as part of the inaugural VIP Dairy Showmanship Contest, sponsored by the Center for Dairy Excellence and PennAG Industries Association and was hosted by Sen. Elder Vogel Jr. (R-Allegheny/Beaver/Lawrence).

Prior to the show, constituents gave legislators lessons on showing animals. Members of the Pennsylvania Dairy Task Force were matched with each team to talk about the needs of the dairy industry.  Metzgar hosted a House Republican Policy Committee hearing on the milk pricing crisis in Berlin earlier this week.

The winner of the inaugural event was Sen. Mike Waugh (R-York), assisting Kelly Johnson of York County in showing a Guernsey dairy cow.
