Metzgar Issues Statement Regarding Sunday Debate on Gambling Expansion
Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) today issued the following statement in response to the Sunday debate on amendments to Senate Bill 711, which expands gambling in Pennsylvania:
“Instead of attending their places of worship this past Sunday, proponents of expanding gambling chose the Lord’s day of rest to debate the legalization of so-called ‘table games’ in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The debate was reminiscent of the 2004 vote to legalize slot machine gambling, when the Legislature hid under the cover of night to propose another big-city subsidy that was cloaked in the promise of property tax relief that never materialized.
“Rather than creating a responsible budget that cuts wasteful spending, the legislature chose to debate a highly addictive, morally questionable new revenue stream. To say that all those who gamble are irresponsible would be mistaken. Why, though, would your representatives--elected officials who are tasked with safeguarding our ways of life-- legalize a vice that has been known to tear apart families and lead many to financial ruin? They are on the verge of choosing the easy way, not the right way.
“State government should be run like every other business; when there are lean years, responsible businesses cut costs. They do not start making bets in the back room to make a little extra money.
“I oppose this poor piece of legislation, and I am embarrassed that this debate took place on a day which many hold sacred.”
