New Donor Incentives Set for Hunters Sharing the Harvest Program, Says Metzgar
SOMERSET – The annually successful Hunters Sharing the Harvest Program (HSH), which has distributed ground venison to more than 4,000 soup kitchens, pantries, missions and needy families each year, has announced it is eliminating the $15 processing fee requested from donors when dropping off a deer, said Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) today.

“This fee waiver will hopefully offer an incentive to expand the amount of venison that can be collected to feed residents in need throughout the region and many other parts of the Commonwealth,” said Metzgar. “This program has done so much good over the years, and it is good to see that those efforts are being expanded for the benefit of residents and giving the hunters a break on the fee.”

Metzgar said there has been an overwhelming increase in requests from food banks statewide due to the struggling economy and changes in food assistance programs. The goal of the HSH program is to distribute 100,000 pounds of venison to those in need.

In addition, several businesses and industries, along with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, have entered into a partnership to provide the coverage of processing costs and items to assist with the individual’s deer harvest.

In Somerset County, the processing station is located at Raley’s Custom Butchering, 450 Menser Road.
