Metzgar Votes To Reduce Size of Legislature
4/4/2012
HARRISBURG – In an ongoing effort to reduce the size and scope of state government, Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) voted for passage of legislation that would cut the size of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 203 to 153 members, and the Senate from 50 to 38 members.

“Passage of House Bill 153 to cut the size of the Legislature is a part of the effort to get control of government spending and to improve the overall lawmaking process in Harrisburg,” said Metzgar. “A smaller number of members will break up the concentration of power in the hands of leaders and enable individual members to have a greater say in advancing issues of importance. I have been working to reduce spending in many areas of state government, and certainly, the legislature must lead by example.”

Metzgar said Pennsylvania has the second largest legislature in the nation, behind New Hampshire. He also cited the fact that Pennsylvania has the second largest number of legislative staffers, behind only New York.

Metzgar points out that this is the start of a lengthy process. As a constitutional amendment, the ultimate decision will go to the voters in the form of a referendum.

The bill goes to the Senate for consideration.
