Metzgar Inheritance Tax Reform Bill Approved by Finance Committee
HARRISBURG – The House Finance Committee Tuesday voted to approve legislation to eliminate the inheritance tax on property passing from a natural parent, adoptive parent or step-parent to or for the use of a child 21 years of age or younger. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford), who worked with Sharon Ackerman, register of wills in Somerset County, to develop the bill.

“This is another step toward reforming the inheritance tax in Pennsylvania and I thank the committee for a positive vote, sending it to the House floor for debate,” said Metzgar. “There is no good reason to slap a tax on property going to, or for the use of a child age 21 or younger who just lost his or her parent. This is a good step forward, but there is more work to be done to reform the overall inheritance tax issue.”

The bill would change the Tax Reform Code that currently places a 4.5 percent tax on that type of a property transfer. If passed by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. Tom Corbett, this tax would drop to zero percent, thus eliminating it.

The bill now goes to the House calendar for consideration.
