Public Utility Commission to Hold Hearing in Somerset on 814 Area Code Issue, Says Metzgar

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) will conduct a public hearing Monday, Aug. 22 in Somerset on the plan to split the 814 area code and create a new code by geographic boundary, Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) today announced.

“Despite the fact that the PUC has already held hearings where we successfully advocated for keeping our 814 area code, we must fight to keep it again,” said Metzgar. “I encourage our residents to attend the hearing and share comments as the area code split will have a major impact on our region.”

The hearing will be held Monday, Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Somerset Fire Department, 340 West Union St.

The PUC approved a plan in Dec. 2010 to split the 814 area code along geographic boundaries to avoid running out of phone numbers. The split created a new area code, 582, for the northwest part of the Commonwealth and left Somerset with the current area code and seven digit dialing unchanged.

The Commission has reopened the record on the case and is reviewing more than 40 petitions for reconsideration. Alternatives to the initial plan include an overlay of a new area code and various geographic splits of the existing code running east to west, north to south or northeast to southeast.

More information on the hearings and the issue itself can be viewed on the PUC website at
