Metzgar, Stefano Announce $65,000 for Windber Blight Remediation
5/25/2021
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) and Sen. Pat Stefano (R-Fayette/Somerset/Westmoreland) today announced that Windber Borough has been awarded a grant of $65,000 through the Blight Remediation Program for the demolition of six blighted properties in the borough. The project will demolish five residential properties, and one borough-owned property, that present a clear danger to the community.

“These properties are dangerous, abandoned and beyond repair, leaving demolition as the only option,” said Metzgar. “Getting rid of these structures will improve safety and quality of life for all who live in Windber, increasing property value and encouraging reinvestment in the community.”

The Blight Remediation Program, administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA), provides funds for the acquisition, rehabilitation, reconstruction, demolition and clearing of blighted properties throughout the Commonwealth, as well as the planning and administrative costs of said projects.

“While blight may seem to be a purely cosmetic issue, it often brings other serious problems to areas where it persists. By addressing blight before it becomes out of hand, we’re working to combat the crime and drug use that is often attracted by prevalent blight,” said Stefano. “This grant is truly an investment in the community.”

The CFA was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development to administer Pennsylvania's economic stimulus packages. The CFA holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments in Pennsylvania's economic growth.
