Metzgar, Topper Support Local Control for School Sports
8/10/2020
HARRISBURG – Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) today showed support for local school districts by co-sponsoring legislation which would allow school districts to make their own decisions regarding fall sports and activities.

“We’ve clearly seen that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work, and it is unfair to our rural counties to be lumped in with urban centers,” said Metzgar. “It’s time to give back local control and allow these schools to make these decisions, based on their own circumstances, to determine what will work best for them. Let the children play and put our parents back in the stands.”

On Thursday, Aug. 6, the governor recommended that schools shut down all sports and activities for the fall 2020 season.

"As I've said all along, school districts must be able to develop plans that best suit their students and families. That includes what sports look like this fall," added Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton). "We've seen all too often how broad, unilateral decisions have negatively impacted all aspects of society. This bill provides districts with the ability to address concerns locally."
