Metzgar to Introduce Legislation to Give Pennsylvania Sportsmen a Voice on Deer Season Opening Day

HARRISBURG – Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) announced today he is preparing to introduce legislation that would give Pennsylvania hunters and trappers more say in decisions impacting hunting seasons and traditions in the Commonwealth.

Metzgar’s proposal would require the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) to conduct a brief, optional survey when residents purchase their annual hunting or trapping license. The key question would ask hunters when the statewide firearms deer season should begin. If participants decide to take part, they must choose one of the following options: current Saturday after Thanksgiving or return to the traditional Monday after Thanksgiving.

The results of the survey would carry significant weight instead of being seen as a symbolic gesture. According to Metzgar, PGC would be tasked with amending regulations to reflect the will of those who cast their votes. Any changes made would be in effect for 10 years. Resident hunting license applicants would vote in the ninth year to set the opening day for the next 10-year period, ensuring a smooth transition and preventing implementation hiccups.

“Pennsylvania’s hunters and trappers deserve a meaningful voice in this process because they are directly impacted by the Game Commission’s decisions,” said Metzgar. “My intent is to create a direct, data-driven pathway for participants to disclose their preferences in a meaningful way.”
