Metzgar Dedicates Somerset County Bridge in Honor of Local Vietnam War Hero

JENNER TOWNSHIP – To pay respects to Somerset County’s fallen heroes, Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) was accompanied by family members of Private First Class (PFC) Paul A. Gilbert and the community for a bridge dedication ceremony today in Jenner Township. Gilbert, a Gray native, was killed in action on Feb. 19, 1966, in Vietnam.

The bridge, which carries Pennsylvania Route 985 over North Branch Quemahoning Creek, will now be known as the PFC Paul A. Gilbert Memorial Bridge thanks to Metzgar’s successful efforts in getting Act 17 of 2025 signed into law.

“PFC Gilbert’s devotion to duty and love of country continues to inspire us,” said Metzgar. “He’s a brave son whose service and sacrifice remind us that freedom is never free. May this bridge forever carry his name and spirit.”   

Born on May 31, 1945, PFC Gilbert attended Jenner-Boswell Joint High School and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. Prior to graduating, he dropped out of high school and served in the Seabees in the United States Navy before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in November 1964. 

During his time in the Marine Corps, PFC Gilbert served in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as a rifleman. He was awarded several commendations for his bravery, including the Purple Heart.

PFC Gilbert’s legacy will live forever in Somerset County and Washington, D.C. In the nation’s capital, his name is displayed on Panel 5E, Line 50 on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
