NEW BALTIMORE–A local Vietnam War serviceman who died in the line of duty was honored on Saturday, Oct. 15, when a Bedford County bridge was dedicated in his memory.

The Army Specialist Four Harold Phillip Grasser Memorial Bridge was designated under Act 23 of 2022, authored by Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford). Grasser’s family and friends, as well as community members, joined Metzgar in paying tribute to the American hero.

“Army Specialist Four Grasser paid the ultimate price for defending our freedoms, and we are forever thankful for his courage and dedication towards our great nation,” said Metzgar. “I am honored to keep his legacy alive through this bridge dedication.”

Grasser, a Manns Choice native, was killed in action on Aug. 30, 1968, during the Vietnam War at the South Vietnam Go Cong Province.

The bridge named in his honor is located on T.R. 413 on Grasser Road in Juniata Township, Bedford County, over the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River at the intersection of New Baltimore Road.
