HARRISBURG – State Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) today announced that the House of Representatives has passed
House Bill 2787, which would give the authority to make decisions regarding school athletic events to each individual school entity. Schools would determine whether or not to hold athletic and extracurricular events, and whether or not to allow spectators at said events.
Each school entity would develop an athletic, health and safety plan addressing school sports and other extracurricular activities during the 2020-21 school year and post the plan on its website, as well as submit the plan to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
“We’ve clearly seen that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work and is unfair to rural counties to be lumped in with urban centers. That's why I am proud to support House Bill 2787 as a co-sponsor, and with an affirmative vote,” said Metzgar. “It’s time to give back local control and allow these schools to make these decisions, based on their own circumstances, to determine what will work best for them.”
House Bill 2787 has now been sent to the Senate for consideration.
