Metzgar Resolution Calls for Commissioning USS Somerset at Port of Philadelphia

HARRISBURG – The House Tuesday unanimously passed House Resolution 250, calling on the president of the United States and the secretary of the Navy to conduct the commissioning ceremony for the USS Somerset at the Port of Philadelphia, said author Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford).

“This new ship, which is set to be commissioned in January 2014, is named in honor of the heroic actions of the passengers of Flight 93, in conjunction with the undeniable courage demonstrated by the residents of the 69th legislative district in the aftermath of the crash,” said Metzgar. “It would be a fitting honor to have this commissioning take place in Pennsylvania at the Port of Philadelphia.  I am hopeful that by bringing this vessel closer to home, the world will be able to see the pride of Somerset County and their courage in the face of horrific events.   There is plenty of room at the port for this event and, with the unanimous support of the House, I hope that the president and the secretary will take this request into consideration.”

The USS Somerset is a San Antonio-class vessel and is the third ship to be named in honor of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The other two vessels are the USS New York and the USS Arlington.

Metzgar said the USS Somerset has incorporated into its bowstem steel from a dragline and bucket which was at the Flight 93 Crash Site. The ship will lead a crew of 360 sailors and marines.

When commissioned, the USS Somerset will be the fifth vessel to carry that name, with previous ships dating from 1862 to 1955.
